The 72 hours leading up to the major eruption of Mt St Helen’s in 3 Parts.
May 17th 1980 The morning of May 17th came early, my husband and my 2 sons were taking off for a weekend fishing trip. Breakfast made and car packed and I was just kicking back and listening to the radio with a cup of coffee wishing my headache would ease up a bit. I decided to lay down till my daughter got up. So I tried to sleep which was impossible to I got up, and turned on the news and was listening to the latest on the volcano. They were talking about the Red Zone which was set around the volcano which was up to 14 miles from the summit and as small an area as about 3 and a half miles from the summit. The official Red Zone was a 10 mile area that the state police blocked access roads and evacuated homes within. In retrospect it was not nearly far enough away. The blast took out everything within 8 miles from the volcano. The pyroclastic flows went 19 miles from the blast site. But that’ is part of tomorrows story. So my daughter was having a friend come and spend the night since her brothers were not home so we were cleaning house, changing linen etc. The girls were playing in her room, I was watching TV and trying to read a book, neither was possible. So opted for cool cloth on my head and just listening to the radio. I called to check in with my mom and other family and mom said dad had a headache but was ok, I think he was also sensitive but not to the degree I was. Mom only showed signs of reacting years later. It was getting close to dinner time and I had just put dinner in the oven and it would be ready by 7-ish or so. It was almost 7 PM, The girls wanted to eat before they watched TV I can’t remember if it was Eight is Enough or Disney. So I could hear the girls laughing in my daughters room and I had just finished the dishes and laid down on the sofa to see if I could get my headache to ease off just a bit. I was not interested in listening to the program that was on and it was before we had the remote control to our televisions so I had to get up and walk to the corner of the room to turn the channel manually. So I got up and headed over to the TV sitting in the NW corner of the room and I don’t know what happened but I found myself walking across the room and into the wall where the fire place insert was. I could not believe what had happened, the only other time that happened was on April 30 when I was still working for the YMCA and walked into the wall, that event led to my immediate resignation, and was followed within 12 hours of a 5.0 quake so perhaps that was my reaction to the same thing happening again. . So I sat down on the floor and was laughing and then I was crying. I was really scared and I did not know why I had felt that feeling before, with the whale beaching in 1979 so I called my mom and told her I was going to call Channel 2 and tell them the volcano would blow tomorrow. We talked a few minutes and I told her good night. I looked at the clock and it said 8:15 PM we were on Daylight time. So I called the KATU News Room with the direct number they gave me. I asked for the Assignment Editor Doug Crombie he was not working, so I asked for one of the 2 Anchor persons I had spoken to previously so I was hopeful that Stan Wilson was available, I was told he was not. So I spoke to another connection I had their at the station Tom Brown who worked with Doug Crombie. I told Tom, ” Tom you guys wanted to know when the mountain was going to blow, its going to blow in 12 hours.” ” Log my call for 8:20 PM. He said he would make a note and I was sure that he would follow through, he was someone I had worked with in the field with him before. By this time, every one including myself was tired of hearing about Mt St Helen’s. The bulge continued to grow on the N face of the volcano and no one, not even me could have anticipated how severe this eruption could be. So made a note of he time and name of who I spoke to and then had to make one more more call, I had to call Dr Kriethen in MA. I had been talking with him about the research and infrasound research he had been doing with this pigeons. So I reached Dr Kriethen at home and spoke to him briefly telling him that the mountain was going to blow. I wanted to reach out to Ric Tell who had been at my home a few days earlier but I had no idea how to reach him. I had two small baby pigeons at home I was caring for and they seemed to be ok. Later that evening on the news they mentioned that the elephants at the zoo were acting very antsy and angry. So listened to more radio, got the girls a late snack and they went to sleep. My thoughts turned to the people around the volcano especially Harry Truman The old man who lived on the mountain at Spirit Lake. The school kids had taken up a collection and went to see him and tried to get him to leave the mountain He was steadfast in his response. No, I will not leave the mountain I will not leave my home. His wife was buried up there and he said he would stay with the mountain. It was going to be a long night. I couldn’t sleep. Headache and fear were both too strong. Tomorrow Sunday May 18, 1980 The Major Eruption of Mt St Helen’s.

SYMPTOMS AND OBSERVATIONS LAST 12-24HOURS
The last 24 hours I would have to say without any hesitation that my strongest symptoms have been solar flu. The continuous pressure on the sternum and into the chest and back.. squeezing like its hard to get a deep breath. Have not heard about anything so far. Its usually a much shorter lead time for events. I notified my contact today and said we have a Halo or a filament collapse coming and I wanted to let them know. So much pressure. The other area is the legs , knees both sides. Finding it hard to walk but can’t figure out what has caused the symptoms. So that’s about it. Headaches picked up again. Sharp heart pains 3 times last night and then they stopped. Likely Mexico and Chile and Imperial Valley . Other symptoms like low back pains continue but its just more of the same. Watching: Mexico, Chile, Turkey, Japan, Imperial Valley India/Nepal, Myanmar, and China, Taiwan and more for Puebla MX.and some Sierras and Geo thermal hot springs N CA, as well as parts of the Wasatch, ID, MT, UT, and NM, CO and KS, OK, TX, IL, TN, MO, AR, VA, NC * There are more locations but these are the areas I am watching. Also not all locations will experience an event but these are locations that have my attention. Now that France is going over board with quakes, watch for Switzerland and Germany and I am not into conspiracy theory but I definitely believe that CERN is involved in all the recent quakes.
