| Mt St Helen’s St Helen’s is a mountain In Southern Washington And without declaring war The battle she has won She raised her head in fury And earthquakes did abound And smoke and mud were everywhere And ash fell to the ground The forest lands were laid out flat And man and beast were dead On May 18th in “80” Mt St Helen’s reared her head She’d slept since 1857 And finally she awoke The people laughed at her before And she did not like the joke She’s napping now or so they say Perhaps she’s had her fun And man and beast must both agree The battle she has won The rivers changed their course for her The trees laid down in flame And the world will ne’er forget The lovely ladies name So sleep again our lady fair And soothe your wounded pride Let snowfall cool your gentle slopes And your turmoil deep inside We’ll not forget your awesome wrath When you awoke that day And found your sister’s still asleep When you desired play We watch you now in fear and fright Both man and beast lie dead When you awoke on May 18th And reared your fiery head Charlotte King May 20, 1980 © All rights reserved. |
| The 72 hours leading up to the major eruption of Mt St Helen’s in 3 Parts. |
| Sunday May 18th 1980 So I finally fell asleep but was up again by 5 AM and about a hour later one of our friends who was a police officer who lived up the road a ways had seen all my lights on, he was on his way home from a late graveyard shift he knew my husband and kids were fishing as our kids went to school together anyway he was concerned and stopped by to be sure everything was ok. I invited him in and offered him a cup of coffee so we were chatting about the volcano and I told him that I had called the station the night before and told them that it would erupt by 8:20 AM today. We talked a while it was getting close to 6 AM and that the volcano should blow by 8:20 AM tomorrow not a lot of time left. So I walked out with him to pick up my newspaper. I walked down the short sidewalk from the porch and bent over to pick up the paper, I had it in my hand and looked up and it was then I noticed that the entire sky was the color of fire and the old seaman’s saying came to mind “ Red Sky At Night, Seaman’s delight, Red Sky In The Morning, Seaman Take Warning “ So one look at the sky and I uttered the words “ People are going to die today” then I burst into tears. He walked me back to the door and left, I sat down at the table with a cup of tea and continued crying. Then I began to pray for all the people who were on the mountain, residents, hikers, photographers, law enforcement, geologist and US Forest Service and of course Harry Truman and then I said a prayer for all the animals I knew who would not have any warning and would lose their lives in this eruption. I remembered a group of scouts were going into hike into the Spirit Lake area to retrieve their gear, I prayed they would get out. So about 30 minutes later I decided I better try to get some rest. I laid on the sofa with a clear view of the television. Now it was about 7:30 AM and I was listening to the Saturday morning cartoons with my eyes closed. My head felt like it was in a vice, I could not turn my head due to the pain at the back lower L side. My harmonic tremors symptom was working over time, my heart was aching and my ears ached. I was shaking. Chills. Not a good sign. Then I guess I fell asleep for about 25-30 minutes. I was again listening to the cartoons. The TV was still playing I woke up, it was 8:28 AM so I said Okay I was wrong. So I knew something was happening. I again had tears but I wondered what woke me up. It reminded me when I had my kids, I would wake up in labor but not sure what had awakened me. So I just lay there listening. The fog horn sounds were deafening. The was a continuous deep rumbling sound with the usual sound of dual tones for the N Sound. So I continued to lay there eyes closed head pounding. Then the announcer on KATU interrupted the cartoon show and said “ we have just received word that Mt St Helen’s has just erupted “ It appears there was a 5.0 quake and the side of the mountain where the bulge was blown outward. I tried to get up and could not raise my head. It was about 20 minutes before I could raise my head and my L foot was numb but they both cleared up. The doctors surmised I may have had a very minor stroke.? I got up to check on the girls and then checked on the baby pigeons we had and they had died. Apparently the pressure from the mountain was too much for them. Later I would remember this when I started communicating with Dr. Melvin Kriethen who studied pigeons and their behaviors with infrasound and EMF reactions. I placed a call to my mom as I wanted to let her know, I knew they would want to know as my sister and her husband lived in WA as well as a Uncle and many cousins and extended family. I was also getting very worried about my husband and son’s. So I knew he was not in WA or that direction but I was still concerned, but they arrived home within about 3 hours after the eruption before the roads became a parking lot. The news showed so much ash it was hard to see, early reports were mud flows on the Toutle, River So much land was burned and ripped out… USGS Geologist David A Johnston, who was on the ridge watching the mountain said his final words, “ Vancouver, Vancouver This Is It “ The new Cascade Volcano Observatory was named after David Johnston. There were pyroclastic flows moving close to 100 miles a hour, and there were mud flows and ash, lots of ash trees were laying down everywhere. Vehicles were burned and houses were gone and Spirit Lake was just a area of mud and logs and debris. The cabin of Harry Truman was gone as well. When I got up I opened the drapes and was surprised and pleased to see that we had a great view of the mountains eruption from the front window. The ash was rising like a bomb had gone off. It seemed to be stationary and not moving but in reality it was so dense you could not see the movement. There was strange weather as well with lightening and hail reported near the mountain. Within hours of the eruption we were getting ash in Salem and the first ash was grainy like sand but the next bunch hours later and it was like powder. The eruption ash cloud seemed to stay in that one place all day and night and into the next day before it began to dissipate. We survived it, my headache eased off for a bit and then was back again. Each time this happened I told my family ok watch there is going to be another plume and there was. So the migraines did not go away with the eruption. The event made several of our Cascades giants react.. Mt Hood, Mt Baker and Mt Rainier both had some quakes. Even The Three Sisters reacted.. this was followed soon there after with quakes at Popo in Mexico and Mammoth Lakes in the Sierras in less than 2 weeks. Mt Etna had been erupting since April 1980. | SYMPTOMS AND OBSERVATIONS LAST 12-24HOURS |
| The strongest symptom was the continuous pain from the solar activity. The back pains, and the sternum pains into the navel. This is solar and usually shows up 12-48 hours and some times 72 hours before an event.. Then the leg pains. This involve the knee’s on both legs and around the side of the leg and up to the thigh and down to the shin area. That would be Peru, Brazil, Columbia, Guatemala, Ecuador and Costa Rica. L shoulder blade pains continue which is still more for Japan. The headache is likely combination partially from the solar activity and on going quakes and volcanic activity On and off heart symptoms not to severe but sharp jabs 3 times in the last 12 hours. This almost always goes with Southern CA into Mexico and Mexico proper, this is via Imperial Valley and then we have Mexico.. and Puebla R side chest pains. Stomach/ heart and L ear is India and can tie into Nepal, including Myanmar, Hindu Kush Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Kashmir. L earache China, Pakistan Afghanistan and India Then the R side earache. This is Taiwan, Leeward, Windward, Trinidad, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, and Nicaragua. Brow bone headache over both eyes, this is connected to volcanic activity Had to take 1/3 Meclizine today was so spacey unable to drive .. I was at the dentist when the pains began to release. So I made note of the time, it was within about 20 minutes of the actual time of the M7.2 event. Sent out update to my contact things/symptoms started to cause the pain and pressure again tonight. |
