Anatomy of an Earthquake March 25, 1993

THE SPRING BREAK QUAKE MARCH 25, 1993 5.7 5:35 AM PDT

ANEW TIMELINE for a major quake 7.0 or greater the current timeline is March 17-26 .
CURRENT TIMELINE

Hopefully we will not experience any Anniversary Quakes for this event.
I will do a regular update and post a bit later but wanted to share this experience for those who did not know and sharing my personal experience with those who also experienced it.

This is what the quake looked like it lasted 43 seconds of violent shaking…

The second photo was the actual look at what they believe the fault did… it barely moved and then it locked up again. For days before this quake I had been picking up signals sounds, symptoms and more. Ants were active but then disappeared and I noticed when I picked up at that time, the AT&T Cassette Recorder. I would find ants and could not figure out why. Then I saw a few go into the opening at the battery door on the bottom of the recorder machine I removed the screws and found that the entire inside of the case was filled with ants, their larva and babies. They had moved into a moving parts machine to get away from the low frequency that was bothering them. The cats were antsy the cats I had at that time several were roof sitters and several were in climbers.
The day before the quake I had a unwelcome visitor in the house. I always left my back patio door open as the cats were in and out… so you can imagine my surprise when I opened the cupboard next to the stove and there is my large bread making bowl was a curled up and scared opossum, although I am not sure who was more scared, him or me?
So I got a soft cloth dust mop and urged him outside.. he went slowly and hissing all the way… I placed a call to Chris Dodge who was in charge of the Project Migraine that I was the Co Investigator of and told him that something was up, I thought it was likely local to OR or WA. Wild animals coming in the house was a wake up call.
Then about 8 PM the night before the quake I went outside and there were some earthworms on the driveway I did not think much about it as the grass had been recently mowed.. but it was about 10 to 11 PM I noticed the cats were antsy and they were pacing.. crying etc.. I called and checked in with my mom as was my normal habit before I went to bed after the news. She was fine and her grand daughter was staying with her a couple of days as it was Spring Break and they munching on popcorn and were watching a movie. They lived on the NE side of Salem about 6 miles from my location. I lived across the river in West Salem which I had a lot of issues living in West Salem during the early days of Mt. St. Helen’s activity. I thought I would watch a bit of TV and make some popcorn, it just sounded good..not much to watch …
I decided to get some sleep as I had to be at work at 7:15 AM… so I checked the alarm and laid down, something told me not to go to bed, and be near a open window.. I Woke about 5 AM something did not feel right. I expected to have the cats crying to go outside and they were not around. That surprised me. So where were they. I checked outside and no one was roof sitting and none above in the cupboards. So again where were they? I figured they were sleeping in another room but I did not see them. I was getting very uneasy that ” fight or flight feeling had kicked in ”

I knew a quake was building and I thought it was likely off the Oregon Coast. I went outside to get the paper and that is when I noticed the earthworms… all over the driveway and sidewalk. I said Oh No and came back into the house recalling what Helmut Tributsch said in his book When The Snakes Awake. This was classic and it was major. Again I called Chris in Washington DC and told him what was happening and that something would likely happen within 12 hrs or much less.
I walked down the hall noticing my balance was really off and my ears were plugged up same symptoms I would get at the coast near Newport when I lived there…. some heart issues but thought it was likely stress/fear? Anyway I went to check on my husband who was still sleeping peacefully… I knew trying to sleep was useless… I still had not seen the cats.. there were no ants, no where.. so I decided to make a cup of tea and relax with the paper. I put the cup into the microwave and turned it on, walked int the living room and opened the sliding patio door so the cats could get out? ( this is when I do things on auto pilot ) no reason just doing it without thought… This often happens before major events.

The tea was done, I glanced at the clock and it was 5:34 AM PDT… I carried the tea into the living room placed the cup on the table by the sofa, the TV was on, and had just sat down on the sofa and then 5:35 AM PDT * THE QUAKE HIT * It began as a solid Jolt BAM. It came in a 5.7 in magnitude and was located on the Gales Creek Fault approximately 35 miles from Salem Oregon.
It felt like something slammed into the house..then the shaking began. It was a sideways movement and BAM and then the other side and BAM and back and forth, my husband was yelling he could not get out of the water bed I could not keep my balance enough to walk into the bedroom. The concern was the headboard which was not connected to the bed but was a stand alone unit.. it weighed almost 300 pounds and I was concerned/scared it would fall on the bed … the house was still shaking, cracking, crack, crack as it moved literally from side to side. The shaking finally stopped.. the clock showed it lasted a very long 43 seconds.

I expected all the stuff in the shelves would be on the floor.. the interesting thing was that the the quake was moving N-S and the cabinets were all on the E-W walls so although the doors had opened including the side by side refrigerator nothing was on the floor other than small items that had fallen off shelves and counters.

I ran to the bed room to check on my husband and he was okay getting out of bed and getting dressed and making his way to the computer room. I could hear the cats was not sure where they were so I listened and they had opened the drawers under the water bed as it was a Captains Bed. They opened the drawers and slid into the opening and under the water bed which was large enough we used it or some blanket storage. So I used a flash light and opened the door at the back of the bed. There at the front of the bed were my 7 cats several who were bitter enemies all snuggled together for safety, fighting being the last thing on their minds. So I left the door open and about 30 minutes later they came out from under the bed. No cell phone yet so I was finally about to get through to my mom and she said they barely felt it there.. my kids also hardly felt the quake.

Went outside to check or any damage in the area and was surprised to see that the gutters on the N side of the house all the nails were popped out and the same with the siding on the N side of the house the sheets of siding were all coming loose with most of the nails popped free. Decided to check the back yard and the patio had dropped 3 inches.. and the downspout also had dropped 3 inches.

So that being said… I went to work and definitely did not like driving across the bridge to get to work.
For the record I still finding myself almost holding my breath for the short drive across this bridge.
I was braced for a/s but they did not happen. We had a small 4.0 event but that was the largest event so far.
I had a call from a official who worked for the City of Molalla about 32 miles from my location. The FD and first responders were having an outdoor breakfast in the parking lot of the fire department. Eggs, bacon, toast cereal juice and coffee.. I was invited to attend. Naturally I took them up on it.

So arrived in Molalla and it was very uncomfortable. I met the man who had called me, grabbed a quick snack and he said how would you like to go for a drive and let me know what you are feeling? I agreed and we started out I had my eyes closed and the areas I felt something he would stop, I would open my eyes and he would tell me what if anything had happened. So we were along a small creek to my R side and I kept getting the waves of nausea and then the headache/heart pains and my ears plugged up.. the only thing he was able to tell me was there were reports of the creek bubbling the day before the quake.. he said they thought it was from old mines in the area.. that happened twice, then the tingling and there was a a small slide in the area from the quake and then he said okay I am going to drive you to an area and I wanted to know what you think/feel.

So we drove back towards town but in a residential area… I began to get dizzy and again my ears plugged up and then surprise I felt a pressure at the base of my skull like harmonics so basically volcanic ?

We drove a bit more and he pulled up to a house with a curving driveway going up to the house, the R side of the driveway was lined with flower beds and there were several upside down terracotta flower pots. So he said ” Lift the pot up ” I did and there was a bubbling mud pot.. or bubbling mud which to me is volcanic in origin. I did the same thing in 3 more pots all had the same thing bubbling mud pots, I felt it was connected to the bubbling in the creek and I did not believe it was caused by an abandoned mine.

So the regular timelines passed and I don’t there were more than about 3 quakes a/s that anyone felt anything. As I said the largest I saw was 4.0 The fault is locked again as you can see in the 2nd photo it was not a large movement but did at least 28 million in damage in Marion and Polk Counties including numerous homes and businesses a century old church in Mt Angel, the Molalla High School and the State Capitol Rotunda in Salem.
I lived in Sacramento 6 years and experienced the Coalinga Quake May 1983 and the Morgan Hill quake of April 24, 1984 and they were nothing compared to this event. This was a 43 second quake at 5.7 they say if the subduction quake hits off the Oregon Coast it would be at least a 9.0 and shaking will be expected to last from 5 to 7 minutes. I can’t even phantom that. This quake would be 31 x more energy and 10 x more shaking and 1000 times stronger than a 6.0 event.

The actual seismograph reading from Portland State University given to me by Salem Electric Power Co. in Salem.
The 2nd photo shows the fault and the estimated movement and location of the fault.

  1. Thank you for sharing this! Gosh, that was quite an experience you had! It’s also a valuable piece of information for events in the future. I saw that southwest of New Zealand there was a 7. earthquake yesterday.
